Class is Now in Session…

I’m not referring to myself (as I’ve already started). I’m referring to this character I’m developing…

So I’m taking this course called “Introduction to Screenwriting.” a course required for me to complete since I am majoring in computer game development. Books for this class I’ll be reading are:

  • Screenplay: the Foundations of Screenwriting,  by Syd Field

In this case, a character I’m developing will be based on themes of:

  • “Courage” and “fear,” in a child’s perspective.
  • Friendship, love (???) and communication (visually and verbally).
  • A point-of-view of my perceptions about  children’s emotions. Paying homage to my younger nieces and nephews.
  • Using the hobby of drawing (my favorite activity) in a way to express the previous point, emotions.

This is all in its embryonic stages, however. I’m not sure if I can make this as something of a video game myself, yet the direction of this seems appropriate for an animation movie or comic at the moment, as both of the two are something I would like to get creative with.

These authors, Flavia Weedn &  Lisa Weedn-Gilbert, published these series of books called “Dream Maker Stories,” and I have hopes to use the references and imagery in my screen writing. I’ve read their books when I was young, two of which I can remember vividly. I recommend if you have younger siblings, cousins, nieces/nephews, and/or have a child, I recommend you read these stories to them.

The Dream Maker Series has eight (8) books. Here’s the list:

  • #1 The Elephant Prince
  • #2 The Little Snow Bear
  • #3 The Moon Maiden
  • #4 The Ragged Peddler
  • #5 The Magic Cap
  • #6 The Enchanted Tree
  • #7 The Giant’s Garden
  • #8 The Star Gift

The books here carry a strong imagination that a young child can grasp and be lost in all of its visual innocence. This is one of the tasks I plan on conveying in this screenplay, developing the character, constructing the story, conflict, resolution, etc. and so forth.

But I haven’t mentioned to you one bit about my screenplay, except the blogs title…

Cody Benjamin & BRAVEton

From left is artist Cody & his manifestation, BRAVEton.

The title of the screen play, still in the works, is about this school boy. ( I had a name for him but I decided to scrap it. “Cody Benjamin?” Perhaps you can suggest names for him and other characters?) He’s about 11-years old, a shy and an introvert, but is a profound and gifted artist. He lives in a single-parent home with his mother. He is bullied on occasions but tends keeps it to himself. I’ll have the beginning of the screen play where he is in the office with his mother talking to the school’s case worker, who’s been watching him. More will be in development as soon as I being using the book, my previous experience in writing a screenplay in high school and developing a draft.

The Screenplay to download & view.
